Lowell General Hospital

Situation:

Founded in 1891, Lowell General Hospital is an independent, not-for-profit, community hospital serving the Greater Lowell, MA area and surrounding communities. Lowell General has been ranked among the top 10 hospitals in the metropolitan Boston area and 12th overall in the state by the U.S. News & World Report’s 24th annual Best Hospitals ranking.

Problem:

The past several years have brought change to the Lowell General organization, with the creation of a new parent organization (Circle Health), a $95 million/200,000 square foot expansion, a merger with Saints Medical Center, and a transformation of off-site locations. The core project included a hospital redesign that required a comprehensive traffic flow analysis, and the creation of interior and exterior design systems and standards.

Solution:

Lowell General was looking for a responsive and hands-on partner to provide wayfinding and signage standards throughout their facility, so they turned to Sign System Solutions. A new directional sign system was developed for simplified navigation and to support Lowell General’s new branding. Easy to update signs were created to accommodate changes during construction and for future flexibility. Specialty nursing care and updated code-required signs were key components of the overall signage program.

Note:

We recently completed a clean, coordinated signage project for the new state of the art Patient Service Center. We also completed an overall strategy for signage across many of the organization’s locations while greatly improving access for patients and visitors. As a result, a model for future signage and wayfinding is now integrated into Lowell General Hospital’s marketing standards.

“Where Sign System was extremely helpful was in change management. They were versatile and responsive to our needs, despite a lot of challenges.”
