Facility Guideline Institute Publishes its 2014 Healthcare Facility Guidelines

The Facility Guidelines Institute has recently published its 2014 Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospitals and Outpatient Facilities and the new Guidelines for Design and Construction of Residential Health, Care, and Support Facilities. Recently updated, the guidelines were first introduced by the federal government in 1947, in an effort to implement the Hill-Burton program.

With the input of more than 125 volunteer healthcare and design professionals, researchers, and others industry allies provided input on revisions throughout the four-year cycle. The Health Guideline Revisions Committee considered 1,995 proposals and 1,243 comments.

A few of the main changes for the updated guidelines include the following:

  • New language on safety risk assessments and medication safety zones;
  • Revamped surgery and endoscopy requirements;
  • Increased requirements for commissioning infrastructure systems;
  • New requirements for technology systems.

More updates on improving the application of the guidelines to existing hospitals and outpatient facilities. In addition, requirements for operating rooms and support areas in surgical facilities have also been revised.
